This accessibility statement applies to Primo, locally branded as FindIt@Bham, accessed via https://birmingham-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/ or https://findit.bham.ac.uk/.

 

Using this Website

Primo is a third party system provided by Ex Libris to run the library search on behalf of the University of Birmingham. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

• zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
• navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
• navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
• listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We've also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website aren't fully accessible:

• screenreaders may not capture all information visible to a sighted user
• keyboard focus may be missing or difficult to see
• some page elements do not reflow correctly and cover background content at high levels of zoom

This accessibility statement is limited to the FindIt@Bham web site. The University purchases many resources which are available online, such as e-books, e-journals and databases. These can be found by searching FindIt@Bham. If a publisher produces information about how accessible their resource is, we will provide a link to it, alongside the licence conditions. The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

 

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

The following problems have been detected during accessibility testing and we are in the process of addressing them. Unless otherwise specified, these issues need to be fixed by our third-party supplier. We are in the process of obtaining timescales from them and will update this statement no later than December 2024. Our supplier also publish their own accessibility roadmap for Primo (the software upon which FindIt@Bham runs) which shows how and when they plan to improve accessibility on this website.

Grouped by WCAG 2.1 criteria:

• 1.3.1 Info and relationships
  • There is an incorrect ARIA child role in the navigation menu. The supplier will fix this in November 2024.
  • Screen readers do not capture all of the information visible to sighted users, for example the hover text on navigation menu options at the top of the page, or the correct number of results when first entering the results page.
  • Some form fields have inaccurate or insufficient ARIA labels, for example in the Interlibrary loan request form.
  • Headings can be missing or inappropriate, for example text is inappropriately marked as headings in the search results.
  
  
• 1.4.3 Contrast (minimum)
  • Some text does not have sufficient contrast between the text and background colour.
  
  
• 1.4.10 Reflow
  • Some images appear to be pixelated at high levels of zoom.
  • Some buttons or text go off the edge of the screen, or create a horizontal scroll bar when at high levels of zoom.
  • Some icons, such as the 'Get Help' icon, cover background content when using the site at particular combinations of zoom and browser window size.
  
  
• 2.1.2 No keyboard trap
  • There are places in the interface where keyboard navigation is counter-intuitive because of the inconsistent ways in which focus is shown, for example in the Use QR or Copy Link functionality. See also 3.2.4 Consistent identification.
  
  
• 2.4.7 Focus visible
  • There are places in the interface where focus is either not shown or is difficult to see. For example, you cannot see when you are focussed on the radio buttons in the Advanced Search or Interlibrary loan request forms when using a keyboard.
  
  
• 3.2.4 Consistent identification
  • Focus is shown in inconsistent ways, sometimes with an underline and sometimes with a coloured box.
  
  
• 3.3.2 Labels or instructions
  • Keyboard navigation and screenreaders do not land on the main page heading when entering some pages, for example the Interlibrary loan request form, which means that some users may not find it easy to identify where their user input is required.
  
  

 

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 30 January 2020. It was last reviewed on 19 June 2024.

This website was last tested in June 2024 against the WCAG 2.1 AA standard. The test was carried out by a combination of: running Lighthouse accessibility audits, Deque Axe automated page accessibility testing, and manual testing.

We tested a sample of pages based on the functionality of this web service.

We tested:

• our main website platform, available at https://findit.bham.ac.uk/
• functional pages covering simple and advanced searching, results and browsing, searching/browsing of electronic resources, forms for requesting interlibrary loans and requests
